 light hamburger bun - bagel sub Oct 16, 2006

I have been gluten free for two years now and have long given up on having a hamburger bun again. However, one of my favorite GF breads is the Ener-G light Tapioca loaf (when toasted and buttered, reminds me of regular white bread as tapioca tastes more like wheat than rice breads do) so I thought I'd give these a try.
We tried a hamburger with everything, burger, mayo/mustard, cheese, avocado, onion slice, and even bacon, and it went fairly well. The bun is a little on the small side and had some crumbling on the bottom toward the end, but not too much unlike my memory of a regular bun. Also, the buns are a little on the dry side, but I'm fine with that - most GF bread products are heavy and wet. This even has a nice chewy texture to it and smells faintly of sourdough. We briefly toasted it on the grill with the burgers first.
Today I toasted one in the toaster and spread with cream cheese, sprinkled with minced garlic, and this is the closest to a bagel I've had in several years. I'm thrilled! Now I have a great breakfast (wrote "breadfast" first! ha!) to try other than the regular GF cereals I've been eating for more than a while.
Plus, Ener-G products are packaged so they will have a long shelf life, so buying a 6-pack (four buns per pack) is no problem - they'll be good for quite a while.
I would give this a 4 1/2 if I could - the 1/2 is because of the dryness. However, I notice it less with cream cheese on it. Enjoy!

This product is just OK. Will not buy again. Too thick and crumbly. Does not hold up.

I was really disappointed when I tried the hamburger buns. No matter what I did with them, including heating them in the microwave with a damp paper towel, they were hard to chew and swallow and did not taste anything remotely close to a hamburger bun. This is one item I would not recommend to any one.

I first ate these buns in Disney World. They served them everywhere to anyone who needed gluten-free bread. They are low in calories and do not have that awful taste usually present in white rice breads. While I know there are tastier gluten-free breads, I rely on these because they are acceptable and low in calories. Mary Ann

My son has celiac and we also discovered these while at Disney- I had seen them in the market but was reluctant to buy them because the idea of a bread with a sell-by date a year away turned me off. However, my son was so pleased with them at Disney that I ordered them when we got home and he couldn't be happier. When we open a 4- pack, we slice them all- he toasts the ones he wants immediately, and i put the remainder in baggies and freeze them- next time he needs one, it goes from freezer to toaster. Not only does he eat them at home, but if he is going out for a burger with his friends, he toasts one, puts it in a baggie and brings it along, at the restaurant he orders a bunless burger and when it arrives, he adds the bun. I suspect the folks that don't like these are comparing them to wheat bread- if wheat bread is not an option, you can't do better than this bun.
